  15. The following items were added after the manual went to print.
  16.  
  17.  -  When displaying the list of all available newsgroups, you can
  18.     search for a specific text string in the title of the newsgroup.
  19.     Select Set Filter and type in the text string you would like to 
  20.     search for. Press the Set button. Any newsgroups which contains
  21.     that string anywhere in the newsgroup name will be displayed. To clear,
  22.     press the Reset Filter button.
  23.  
  24.  -  Apply ROT13 has been added to the Edit menu. ROT13 scrambles messages.

  28. Section 2 - Notes on Features

  31.  - Newsgroups Dialog/Newsgroup List box
  32.  
  33.    Whenever you display the Newsgroups dialog or when you use the Retrieve
  34.    button to obtain the list of newsgroups, QMC fills the Newsgroups list
  35.    box with all the News Server's newsgroups.  Since this list can be very
  36.    large, QMC provides several navigational aids for selecting a newsgroup:
  37.  
  38.      1. Use the mouse or keyboard to scroll through the list as you
  39.      would any Windows list box.
  40.  
  41.      2. Select Set Filter and type in the text string you would like to 
  42.      search for. Press the Set button. Any newsgroups which contain
  43.      that string anywhere in the newsgroup name will be displayed. To clear,
  44.      press the Reset Filter button.
  45.      
  46.      3. By default, the Newsgroups list contains all newsgroups from the
  47.      News Server.  Use the Newsgroups dropdown list to select a subset
  48.      of newsgroups to display.  You can use the mouse to control the
  49.      dropdown, or place the cursor in the Newsgroups edit field and use
  50.      the up/down arrows to scroll through the groups of newsgroups.
  51.      
  52.      4. Begin to type the name of a newsgroup.  If the newsgroup is
  53.      currently in the Newsgroups list, QMC moves the list box selection
  54.      to the corresponding entry.  If the newsgroup is not currently in
  55.      the displayed list, QMC attempts to match the typed name to an
  56.      entry in its database.
  57.      
  58.   NOTE: On Windows 3.1 systems, if the number of newsgroups on your 
  59.      News Server exceeds about 8100, QMC issues a warning that it can't fit the 
  60.      entire list in its list box.  You have the following options:
  61.   
  62.      1. If you know the name of the newsgroup you wish to subscribe to,
  63.      type it into the Newsgroups edit control.  Even if the newsgroup
  64.      didn't make it into the listbox, QMC attempts to match the name to
  65.      entries in its database.
  66.      
  67.      2. Use the Newsgroups dropdown list to select a subset of
  68.      newsgroups to display in the listbox.  Then browse through the
  69.      displayed list or type a newsgroup name.
  70.  
  71.      This limitation does not pertain to Windows 95.

  74.  - News Server Timeouts
  75.  
  76.      Some news servers can get extremely busy. When checking for new news
  77.      articles, busy servers that support the XOVER command may cause QMC to
  78.      report timeout errors more often than when news is checked with the
  79.      XHDR method.
  80.  
  81.      If you experience timeouts when checking for news articles, use
  82.      Tools/Preferences/Advanced and uncheck the "Use XOVER" option.

  85.  - Cancelling a CONNECT Command with Qwinsock
  86.  
  87.      Under certain conditions and configurations, when immediately canceling
  88.      a CONNECT command, QMC and Qwinsock may return to an offline state, yet
  89.      the modem remains off hook, and a dial tone still sounds.  To remedy
  90.      this condition, select Connect then Disconnect from the Qwinsock system
  91.      menu. This will reset the modem and put the phone on hook.

  94.  - Backing up and Compacting Databases
  95.  
  96.      You should back up your databases on a regular basis as a disaster 
  97.      protection measure. Use the Tools/Database command and select the Backup 
  98.      option.
  99.  
  100.      Whenever you Compact or Backup the databases, you will need an amount of 
  101.      free disk space equal to the size of the largest DAT file. Example, if 
  102.      the  MSGSTORE.DAT is 2Mb in size, and is the largest of the 3 database 
  103.      files, there should be at least 2Mb free disk space before doing the 
  104.      Compact.

  106.  - Connecting And Staying Online
  107.  
  108.      When going online by selecting the Connect/Connect pulldown menu option,
  109.      QMC will continue to remain online until the Connect/Disconnect pulldown
  110.      menu is selected, or until Qwinsock's linger timeout is reached.  To
  111.      achieve a true demand dial connection using Qwinsock, that is, to dialup
  112.      when checking mail/news and hang up when the retrieval is complete, do
  113.      not use the Connect/Connect pulldown menu option. Instead, start
  114.      checking mail/news while QMC is already offline, this will cause QMC to
  115.      automatically use its online/offline capabilities.

  118.  - Newsgroups And Multiple ISPs
  119.  
  120.      If there are newsgroups previously configured for a different ISP, and
  121.      you would like to check the newly configured ISP for articles in that
  122.      particular newsgroup, the News Server setting in the Newsgroup
  123.      Properties dialog will need to be modified to reflect the new server
  124.      name.  Because of this, it is recommended that all newsgroups for a
  125.      particular ISP be grouped in a single folder for that particular news
  126.      server.  This makes it much easier to check for new news articles when
  127.      multiple ISP accounts are being used.

  130.  - Offline/Online Mode and Qwinsock
  131.  
  132.      If "Auto Disconnect on WSACleanup" is not enabled in Qwinsock
  133.      (Settings), the phone connection to the server will remain intact when
  134.      QMC is toggled to offline mode.  When this Qwinsock feature is enabled,
  135.      QMC will operate in a "true" demand dial manner.

  138.  - Program Startup Password
  139.  
  140.      When configuring QMC to use the program startup password feature
  141.      (Preferences/Advanced), the selected password is encrypted in the QMC
  142.      database files (*.DAT).  It is very important that you do not forget
  143.      your password. If you forget your password, there is no way to access
  144.      the QMC database files. Please do not lose or forget your password.  If
  145.      you do, contact Quarterdeck Technical Support to help you recover your
  146.      database files.

  148.  
  149.  - Stacker v4.0 Volumes and Low Available Disk Space
  150.  
  151.      It is very important to have plenty of available disk space on the
  152.      Stacker volume where the QMC database files reside.  If while
  153.      downloading messages to a Stacker drive, you run out of disk space, QMC
  154.      should be able to recover with no problem.  However, Windows itself may
  155.      not be able to properly write information to the disk when shutting down
  156.      back to DOS. This may result in corruption or loss of data.

  159.  - Viewing File Attachments
  160.  
  161.      Using file associations defined in the [Extensions] section of the
  162.      WIN.INI file, QMC will allow you to open files that have been attached
  163.      to your inbound mail by clicking on the 'Open' button on the Attachments
  164.      dialog window.
  165.  
  166. Section 3 - Misc. Issues
  167. ========================
  168.  
  169.  - When Qwinsock's linger timeout is reached and disconnects, QMC is still
  170.    left in 'online' mode.  [See prior section on Connecting and Staying
  171.    Online for more information.]
  172.  
  173.  - If for some reason the mail server is not available (for instance, the
  174.    server is currently booting up) when QMC checks/sends mail, QMC does not
  175.    "see" any messages when the server becomes available.
  176.  
  177.  - With the toolbar configured as a floating window,  closing it and
  178.    changing the style (View/Toolbar Style) to a different setting, and
  179.    reopening it causes the buttons, text and graphic images on the toolbar
  180.    not to be displayed properly.
  181.  
  182.  - When selecting multiple message headers (SHIFT-DOWN ARROW), as the
  183.    headers get selected, an outline border is displayed on various headers.
  184.  
  185.  - The 'Destination Field' in the Copy/Move dialog box is case sensitive.
  186.  
  187.  - Toggling Show Newsgroups (F2) to actually show the newsgroups, the
  188.    folder tree does not expand to show the newsgroups. Only those folders 
  189.    that are already expanded will show newsgroups. F2 does not in and of 
  190.    itself expand folders.
  191.  
  192.  - After retrieving news articles, resetting the Message Number to zero in
  193.    the Newsgroup Properties dialog box, then retrieving articles again
  194.    causes duplicate message headers to be displayed in the header list.
